Evans - Richard Earl Gregory passed peacefully on Jan. 4, 2026. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather, dedicated civil servant, veteran, and faithful Christian. Born Feb. 20, 1937, Earl was raised in Augusta, GA, and spent most of his life in Evans, GA. He married his sidekick, Elizabeth Barton Gregory (Bette) in Aug.1968, with whom he shared countless TV-worthy shenanigans. He was a loving father to Elizabeth G. Hamilton (Beth), grand to William R. Hamilton (Liam) and Lauren E. Hamilton, and father-in-law to Robert G. Hamilton III. He was the youngest of the late James S. and Minnie L. Gregory, and brother of the late Laura G. Lanier and the recently late James S. Gregory Jr., whom he always shared fond childhood memories. He earned his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of South Carolina, where he played for the Gamecocks Tennis Team. He had achieving memories with the U.S. Coast Guard and Lockwood Greene Engineering before returning to Augusta to be closer to family, where he spent a majority of his career as a civil servant for the U.S. Army as a Professional Mechanical Engineer. After retirement, he lived a busy life playing tennis, developing land, being outside, workshop piddling, and serving his community. Earl was a gentleman with a wonderful nerdy goofy sense of humor. He was full speed or napping. We celebrate his birth, life and passing on his birthday with a graveside service at Westover Memorial Park on Feb. 20, 2026 at 11am.
