Phyllis M. Powell

Phyllis M. Powell, a beloved Mother, matriarch and cherished friend, peacefully departed this world on September 20, 2026, at home. Born on December 17, 1936, in San Diego, CA, Phyllis was a beacon of love and warmth throughout her remarkable life.

The daughter of Freda Davis Cato and Alfred Loring Miner, Phyllis was raised by her devoted mother and stepfather, James (Jake) W. Cato. She graduated from Edgefield High School in Edgefield, SC, where she left an indelible mark by helping her teammates secure the Girls' Basketball State title in 1955.

In 1957, Phyllis married Starling E. Powell, and together they built a nurturing home in Augusta, GA. Phyllis and Starling raised three children, and her home became a haven for many, as she welcomed countless people into her life, offering them motherly love and a safe place to land. Her heart was always open, and her kindness knew no bounds.

Phyllis worked at Riegal Textile Mill from 1955 until she moved to Augusta in 1965, where she continued to touch lives with her warmth and generosity. She attended Risen Church in Grovetown, GA, where she worshipped alongside her family and community.

Phyllis had a deep love for the outdoors, and her backyard vegetable garden was a testament to her nurturing spirit and passion for nature. Her family fondly remembers her as a woman who not only grew plants but also cultivated love and compassion in everyone around her.

She is survived by her loving children, Paula Powell-Kitchens and Shelly Powell Dixon, and her cherished grandson, James (Chelsea) Kitchens. Her legacy continues through her great-grandchildren, Kamden and Kayden Kitchens. Phyllis is also survived by her siblings Terry J. Cato (Charella), Deriel Cato, and Randy Cato (Agatha), who will all miss her dearly.

Phyllis was predeceased by her parents, Freda Davis Cato, James W. (known as Jake) Cato, and A.L. Miner, her husband, Starling E. Powell, her son, Dennis E. Powell, and her brother, Ronald L. Miner (Donna).

Her family extends heartfelt gratitude to Charella, Terry, and Diana Cato for providing a loving home for Phyllis' hospice care, and to Agape Care hospice for their compassionate support during her final days.

A service to honor and celebrate Phyllis' life will be held on September 27, 2026, at 3:00 PM at Risen Church, located at 630 E. Robinson Avenue, Grovetown, GA.

Phyllis' legacy of love, warmth, and generosity will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know her. She will be deeply missed and forever cherished
