Herbert “Dee” Addison Caudle Jr., 72, of Augusta, Georgia, passed away peacefully on May 3, 2025. Born December 30, 1952, in Augusta and raised in McCormick, South Carolina, Dee’s fascination with languages and the arts inspired his 30-year career as a French teacher at A.R. Johnson Health Science and Engineering Magnet School and Cross Creek High School. A proud Clemson University graduate, he made it his mission to share not only the French language but also the culture he cherished.
Immersing himself in art history at Clemson deeply influenced Dee’s efforts to bring culture and artistic appreciation to his language students. He sought creative ways to engage them, moving beyond textbooks—whether by cooking crêpes, screening French-dubbed Disney films, or challenging them to meet his high standards. Above all, he aimed to ignite in them a lifelong love of language and culture.
His passion for French was surpassed only by his devotion to his daughter, whom he taught to respect diverse cultures and value the arts as essential to humanity. The son of Sonny and Lil Caudle of McCormick, S.C., He is survived by his daughter Whitney and son-in-law Anthony, his sister Cindy Neal, his brother John Lawrence, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, Friends and Former Students who dearly loved him. Especially by his adored granddaughter, Aria, who will forever cherish her "Pépère."
A memorial service will be held at The Kroc Center of Augusta on Wednesday, May 7, at 2:00 PM in the Kroc Church. Family, friends, and former students are invited to share fond memories of him. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to The Salvation Army of Augusta to support those facing hardship in the local community.
