Waynesboro, GA. Elwood O’Neal Rabun, Sr., age 83, passed away Sunday, April 20, 2014, at his residence with his family surrounding him. He was born July 20, 1930 in Augusta, GA., to the late Raymond and Emma (Hair) Rabun.He was preceded in death by his first wife, Vera (Collins) Rabun and one son, Robert (Bobby) Cato; 7 sisters and 4 brothers. Mr. Rabun was a member of Piney Grove Baptist Church, American Legion Post #178, Hephzibah F. & A. M. Masonic Lodge #412, Augusta Shriners Club and a member of the Scottish Rite.He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. Prior to his retirement, Mr. Rabun worked for Thermal Ceramics. He is survived by his wife of 17 years Mildred (Johnson); his children, Sandra (Allen) Bugg of Hephzibah, Hammond (Lynn) Rabun of Augusta, Teresia Whisnant of Waynesboro, Elwood (Sherry) Rabun, Jr. of McBean, Mike (Robin) Rabun of Augusta, Janet (Barry) Bennier of Waynesboro, Susan Izbicki of Parksville, S.C., Terry Cato of Augusta and Shannon Cato of Alma, GA.; 22 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren. Family will receive friends Wednesday 6 pm to 8 pm at THE POTEET FUNERAL HOME, 3465 Peach Orchard Rd., HWY 25, Augusta, 30906, 706.798.8886. Funeral services will be Thursday 11 am at Piney Grove Baptist Church, 5060 Mike Padgett HWY, McBean, with Rev. Mark Joyner, officiating.Burial to follow in the church cemetery.Pallbearers will be Ernie Martin, Jeff Ard, James Atkinson, Gill Smith, John Peek and Duane Radcliffe.
