MSG Douglas L. Vandenhuerk, 70, entered into rest on May 23, 2022. Doug was born in Detroit, MI and served with distinction in the United States Army. He operated in communications through posts in Ethiopia, Turkey, Iran, Alaska, Ft. Gordon and the Netherlands before retiring after more than 20 years in the service. During his time at Ft. Gordon, he served as a volunteer firefighter in Augusta for several years. After retiring from the military, he received his Diploma in Machine Tool Technology from Augusta Technical College and served as an assistant instructor. In civil service, he managed the downtown location of Habitat for Humanity for several years before retiring once more. He went on to enjoy his outdoor hobbies, wine making and tinkering as well as maintaining the high physical standards he strove for while in the army. He leaves behind his loving wife and daughter. They will miss his ready wit, quirky humor, stories and love. There will be a private memorial with close friends for remembrance.
